The Iruelas Valley Nature Reserve

The Reserve offers a number of routes of varying difficulty, from the Senda Accesible, an accessible route that follows a horizontal wooden walkway that starts out from the car park, to the hike up to the Pozo de la Nieve, which takes more than three hours to complete. We recommend heading for the Casa del Parque (located next to the car park) where you’ll find information about possible routes, or going directly to the campsite car park, where there are recreational areas for picnics and barbecues, and which is the starting point for the Senda Botanica and the Senda de las Víboras. For the kids, there’s a play area at the Casa del Parque where you’ll also find the Flora and Fauna Interpretation Centre as well as the La Resinera – resin collection used to be an important activity among those living in the valley. La Posada del Agua is one of the nature reserve’s official information points. we’re here to answer all your questions, so ask away! We can also organise interpretive routes led by an official guide for groups.

Hiking in El Castañar de El Tiemblo

This is truly wonderful in autumn, thanks to the spectacular colours of the leaves and the chestnuts they produce, but it’s a great option at any time of year. To get there, you need to go into El Tiemblo, and follow the signs. In the autumn, access is closed to cars when the car park is full, so you’ll need to park at the bottom, and take the council-run bus service up, which costs €2. It’s a lovely place for taking a short walk to the huge century-old chestnut tree known as El Abuelo (‘The Grandfather’), or alternatively a long route to El Pozo de la Nieve or Puerto de Casillas. The Bulls of Guisando

Between El Tiemblo and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Before you arrive from the direction of Madrid, or on your way back, don’t miss this place that’s so full of history, and very close to the main road. Here you’ll find a set of ancient sculptures that date from the second century BC, and were created by the Vettones. There are four bulls (or boars), all facing west. It was here that the Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando was signed in 1468, proclaiming Isabella heir to the throne of Castile. She was later to become Isabel la Católica (Isabella the Catholic).
